James has Success in Saatchi Art Prize

Year 8 pupil James Wallis has come second out of 12,000 entries in the Sunday Telegraph/Saatchi Gallery Art Prize for Schools. At a glitzy ceremony in Chelsea, James was awarded his prize totalling £6,000 for his moving depiction in oils of WWI soldiers entitled The Untouched. "I had been learning about the First World War in History and having watched various films and plays I was inspired to paint a graphic emotion on my interpretation of the First World War." Form Five Battlefield Tour

Angela Paterson organised a fantastic tea party in aid of SSAFA that raised over £2,000 last week! Stars of the West End teamed up with the Woodcote music dept to entertain the visitors whilst Woodcote boys sold raffle tickets and cakes that many of them had baked. It was lovely to see so many old friends of Woodcote back at the school and a huge thankyou to all who helped make the day such a success.

Woodcote Win Awards!

Colin Holman has been honoured by The Tatler with the Lifetime Achiever trophy at their prestigious Schools Awards ceremony held at The Dorchester last week. He made a moving speech reflecting on his 51 years at Woodcote and on schoolmastering in general. Woodcote also picked up the Contribution to the Community Award at Olympia in a ceremony hosted as part of the Archant Schools Show. Tom Parker Bowles presented Andrew Monk with the trophy for the work done in raising money to complete the Valley End Cricket Club's disabled cricket facility.

Friday Night is Fun Night

Hot new band The Luminites are booked to play at Woodcote on Friday 14th October as part of our varied Friday night event series. We also have the man who Cycled to the Ashes, Oli Broom, coming and an Everest explorer as well as a whole host of other lecturers. See the school booklet for more details.

Weekend Events

The weekend events programme for boarders is taking shape. As well as the usual favourites such as camping in the woods, cooking on fires and the golf competition we have added the following; Flume Fun at Coral Reef, Medieval Warfare Challenge, Pizza and Race Night, Laser Quest Visit, Mountain Biking at The Lookout and an Archery Demonstration. There will also be a Woodcote's Got Talent night on Sat 12th November!

Old Boys' Curry Night

Polo; Copenhagen Cup Success

Woodcote were asked to play in a Prep Schools' Exhibition Match as part of the prestigious Copenhagen Cup at Coworth Park Polo Club held on Sunday 15th May. The event was run by Wellington College and featured Harvard, Oxford University, Eton, Harrow and Cheltenham College. Woodcote played against Beaudesert Park from Gloucestershire and won a close fought contest 1-0 thanks to a brilliant solo effort from Jack Hyde. It proved to be a fantastic social occassion with many Woodcote families getting together for picnics in the park before cheering the team to victory. Huge thanks to Ed Lyddon and Gill Glimmerveen for their hard work in making the day a huge success.

Charity Golf Day

Bookings are now open for the Woodcote House Charity Spa & Golf Day in aid of The Willow Foundation. The event will take place at Foxhills Spa and Country Club on Thursday 13th October. Teams of four will compete for the golf trophy whilst supporters & friends of the school can use the spa and resort facilities before rejoining the golfers for a gala luncheon and auction. Godspell Tickets

Seven boys from Woodcote are involved in a joint production of Godspell with St Mary's, Ascot. This fantastic opportunity allows them to perform at the magnificent Rose Theatre at St Mary's. If you would like tickets to see the production and to support our lads then please contact the box office by e mail rosetheatre@st-marys-ascot.co.uk Tickets are, of course, free. Polo News 2011-03-02 05:23:03 Jack Hyde has returned from his trip to Argentina for the Torneo Internacional Potrillos , played in Coronel Suarez - where his team, The Antelopes, won the prestigious trophy for emerging talent. The best young players from around the world gathered together for an intensive ten days of polo tuition and tournament play. Jack's success has certainly been an inspiration for the other members of the polo squad at Woodcote.

The Pelican Bank

The school now has its own bank for the boys. The Pelican Bank is named after the coaching inn which originally sat on the grounds Woodcote now occupies. Our bank manager is Mr Nick, the school proprietor and he produces a statement for the boys at exeats and half-term. The boys decide how much of their pocket money they give to Chapel collections, charity events and can buy ping pong balls, pens, tuck etc. The bank has been the focus of PSHE sessions that have looked at personal finance and other fiscal issues.

Magnificent Merlin!

Sunday saw Yr8 boy Merlin Lawrence complete 15 laps of the school cross country course to raise money for Help for Heroes. This was entirely his own initiative and he raised £452 for the charity. He was helped by the other boarders who ran with him, handed out drinks and made posters to encourage him on his way. It was a truly remarkable and selfless effort and an inspiration to others. Well done Merlin!
